"Custom Surfboards + Abstract Art"

What first brought you to Ojai, and how has the town influenced both your surfboard shaping, artwork and lifestyle?

Renting in Carpinteria and looking for our own home, Ojai popped up on the radar. Then, visiting friends there, we connected with the land.  Now, living close to the land and with nature, we can’t help but be influenced by the energy here. My art has matured here. My lifestyle has grown deeper into self, family, and community. My surfboard shaping has been refined.

You’ve worked with clients in Japan and around the world. How has this international influence shaped your designs, and what’s your favorite part about collaborating across cultures?

The waves in Japan are similar to here, so the designs translate easily. My surfboard design arises from amplifying the type of surfing I like, which is light-footed, nimble, and groovy. Japanese surfers are very similar, so it fits. However, the landscape in Japan is very different. So, the natural colors of their surroundings are different. The colors I use are very Californian. Desert vibes, mountainous, California sunset. This seems to be a novel color palette for Japanese people, so they are really drawn to it.

When you’re not shaping surfboards or working on your other creative projects, how do you spend your time in Ojai?

I’m swimming or hanging out at the creek with my family. Tending the garden or maintaining our home. Down time at home with my family.

Favorite surf spots around the world

Local wave Rincon is still my favorite. Next is Baja camp surfing.

How would you describe Ojai to someone who has never visited?

Ojai is a country town with a strong spiritual bend.

What are some things that make Ojai special to you?

Daily dips in the canyon creeks. Grabbing fresh eggs from the coop for morning eggnog. Small town traffic only adds 5 minutes to the commute. Waving to friends driving by. Chatting with other craftsmen at the shop.

Jacob's Ojai Recs:

Three Birds - 205 N Signal St - A hidden gem of a café and boutique bookstore offering artisan coffee and great breakfast, in a cozy, inviting space.

Farmer and the Cook - 339 W El Roblar Dr - A laid-back café serving organic, Mexican fare made with produce from their own farm, plus live music on weekends and a strong community vibe. I especially love their Chai!

Hot Yoga 33 - 11420 N Ventura Ave - Offers infrared-heated yoga classes for all levels, combining detox, strength, and mindfulness in a welcoming, community-centered studio. The teachers are great.

Rains  - 218 E Ojai Ave - A historic, family-run department store offering clothing, home goods, and unique gifts with old-school charm and personalized service since 1914. You can find almost anything here.

Solimar BeachPacific Coast Hwy – Ventura - If you're looking for a solid surf spot in Ventura, check out Solimar Beach. The outer reef offers a fast, punchy wave on big winter swells, and while the inside breaks can be hit-or-miss, they light up with the right tide and swell—plus it's usually more sheltered from wind than nearby spots.

Ojai Community Farmers Market - 414 E Ojai Avenue - Thursday afternoon farmers’ market.  See what the locals are bringing to market and feel the family vibe.
